I recently aquired an adult leucistic texas rat. She was in perfect health when I got her. I set her up in a cage just like I would any other snake. However a week after I had her I noticed she was getting small blister like sores on her cloaca and under her mouth. These sores got progressively worse and started to form all over her boddy. During this time she continued to eat and act normally. I new something was wrong as she shed litterally 3 -times in 6 weeks. It finally came to me. She is allergic to newspapper. I then put her on aspen and the sores went a way inside a week.
I have kept snakes on nespapper for almost 10 years and have never come accross this. Has anyone else experienced this before?
I have since changed all my animals to aspen to avoid any problems that I cant notice. I just wanted to share this to hear what others have to say about this.
Thanks
Allen Sheehan
