: Hey! I am getting a lue beauty rat snake really soon, and i just want to make sure i give it the best care possible.
Hi Stacy,
A 55 gal. is very nice and should serve for quite awhile.
I have a Blue Beauty. She was a hatchling in July 2000. She's in a 40 gal tank and it's still adequate for her. *She* does not hide all day. She has periods (a few days at a time) when she hides, usually after feeding or before a shed. She is out and about a lot-most of the time. She loves to climb and spends a lot of time basking in her 23" high fig tree. (I have both an incandescent and florescent lamp shining on the tree. The branches of the little tree are braided together for support.)
We keep the humidity in our house between 50-60%. I mist/water the plants in her cage, which also increases the relative humidity. When she's getting ready to shed I mist her tank more often.
I have used aquarium gravel as a substrate in the past. It looks nice, but is hard to clean. At the moment, I am using paper towels. They are actually nice even though I have to remove all the plants, etc. to change the paper.
I have a web site for the snake (her name is Nightshade). The address is:
http://hometown.aol.com/cajanka/BlueBeauty/NightshadesPage.html
Enjoy your new snake. Each one has it's own personality. I hope to hear about yours!
