Basically, that is correct. Since snakes are cold blooded animals, their metabolism and other bodily functions slow down when subjected to brumation. This includes the immune system, making them much more susceptible to illness and/or death.
To answer your question, I don't have a clue why she died. Over the years I have lost a few snakes during brumation so I was not surprised. These things happen, I have learned to expect the unexpected in my old age, ;)
