Glenn & Nancy,
I believe we corresponded a while back regarding my frenata. At the time, my captive hatched pair seemed to be thriving. Unfortunately, the male quite eating a couple months ago. Hoping to stimulate him to eat again, I cooled him for one month this winter. I don't know if this procedure works for Asian Elaphe, but he had great body weight so I figured it couldn't hurt. I only dropped the temp to about 62. Shortly after warming him back up, he died. I don't think the cooling was what killed him, as something was obviously bothering him prior to lowering the temps. If anyone has questions as to my specific husbandry practices, I'd be happy to share. Maybe someone has insight as to why he might have died (no autopsy was performed), or perhaps I can help prevent this from happening to someone elses frenata. I have tried to follow the husbandry recommendations in Schulz's Elaphe book as close as possible. The female has never quit eating and is growing well. Since I cannot afford another male, I don't think I will be keeping her (hint, hint). I would like to continue to monitor her for another month or so, just to make sure that she was not affected by whatever killed the male. She was captive hatched in September of 1999 at Bushmaster.
Good luck,
Ronda
