Well it finally happened. Wisconsin has now started the regulation of the Western Foxsnake, among several other species.
In looking at the flyer that is circulating the local pet shops, it is now legal to sell only 3 species of "Herptile" from the State of Wisconsin:
1. Mudpuppy
2. Tiger Salamander
3. Leopard Frog
Possession of Elaphe Vulpina is limited to two (2) animals, and you are granted a 90 day grace period to (and I quote) "Give away" any offspring you produce. You may not sell them, nor can you re-introduce to the wild the offspring of these animals without permit.
The strange thing is that it does nothing to offer any protection to the species, and it is still legal to destroy them if you see fit. I personally see this as an attack on the collector/keeper. I think that many of us are aware of the limiting factors brought on these species by loss of habitat and plain ignorance over the collection and propagation of them for a hobby. Once again it seems that a few have made the decision for the rest of us. Keeping many of these species is the salvation of the species, not their extermination. This new law also applies to Lampropeltis Triangulum (Eastern Milk Snake).
As a reminder, there are roughly 22 species or so of Snakes in Wisconsin. Fox and Eastern Milks range throughout the state. This action is purely an over-reaction to a baseless belief that they are in jeopardy. Unlike the Rattlesnake Dens, which in the past were actually dynamited, Fox and Eastern Milks have been doing fine. I've said my piece, now it's time to do further contact with the State Govt.
