In Reply to: Black Ratsnake Striking, Handling during Bromide posted by Brent on January 10, 2001 at 10:27:34:
: I believe my 2 year old, 2 foot Black Ratsnake, caught summer 1999 as hatchling - 10 inches, may be hibernating as it does not come above the paper substrate which I use, as it normally does. It shed about 2 weeks ago. The cage temperature stays about 70 degrees, with natural lighting from an adjacent window. My concerns are twofold. Should I continue to feed at the expense of throwing away mice and should I continue to handle it during this period or just let it rest until spring. I am concerned about the handling. I handle 1-2 weekly and it still continues to strike or attempt to get away. I handled a 1 year old, 1 foot Yellow California Kingsnake yesterday that was as docile as could be...could have carried it around in my shirt pocket. I know Ratsnakes are more aggressive, but I am hoping this will change, so that I can enjoy my snake more. Any help regarding feeding, handling methods and hibernation would be greatly appreciated as this is my first snake experience.
