It's funny that you mention hypomelanism. Take a close look at my female and notice the coppery eyes and the faded brownish saddles. Then look at the male's crips, clean black on white colors and eyes completely lacking the coppery color.
First a little history, I purchased what are now Dwight's breeders at a small show that Twin Oaks Livestock used to host down the road a piece in Oak Grove/Ft Campbell, KY. I was immediately drawn to their pale colors and was shocked to see Dwight didn't get a pair since he was there too, sorry D, I couldn't resist! As they matured one of them developed the coppery eyes and faded colors that my female seems to have ( I think it's the male, correct me if I'm wrong Dwight). The other looked very much like my male. Anyway, I eventually gave/sold/traded (I don't remember) them to "Mr. Ratsnake" (Dwight)and he finally got babies this past season. He didn't retain the whole clutch but I got a pair and he kept a couple himself. You outta see the hold back from this year he kept for himself. If you like my male, you'll love this one. It is one outstanding ratsnake with very crips marking on a very pale background! Anway, we are suspicious that the female in my collection and her parent that looks the same with the coppery eyes and faded brownish color are hypomelanistic and hopefully dg'll keep this years offspring long enough for us to see for sure as the snakes actually grow into it. They won't be worth any special amount of money but it will be interesting to see. They could very well just be good examples of the natural variation of color in the grey ratsnake but it's awfull suspicious and will be an interesting genetics lesson.
It's good to see someone else who appreciates an animal for what it is, not what is sells for on some breeders price list. I can never say enough good about Dwight for his single minded dedication to a genus of snakes most ignore due to their low financial return.
Anway, thanks for your generous comments Joe.
Happy Herping
