Linzey's SNAKES OF ALABAMA gives the black rat as found most commonly in drier upland areas such as forests and hilly country, whereas the gray prefers damp or moist areas such as swamps, stream and lake edges, flood plains and fields. I live in South Alabama fairly close to the Florida line, and get the very satin-skin dark-blotched grays. We used to cave a lot in North Alabama in limestone country close to the Tenn border, but I never saw a black rat nor did Ken mention seeing one on SERA caving conventions.
Linzey follows them west on thru Oklahoma to Texas.
Audubon says North Louisiana.North Mississippi good guess?

PS...I want one.
