Subtrate?

2 questions:
First, back when I was keeping Elaphe and Bogertophis about 10 years ago, it seemed that the consensus was that using anything other than paper as a substrate was an invitation to disease and/or other calamities. Now, it seems that people are using a variety of things including aspen chips and peat moss. I realize that much of this is empiric and a matter of personal preference, but any thoughts or experiences on the subject would be appreciated, especially in the way of things to avoid. If it's of any consequence, I intend to keep mostly Eurasian species, with maybe a couple of NA species (subocs, bairdi) thrown in.
Second, in the time I have been out of the hobby, I am impressed by the number of new species that are being CB. One of those that is still apparently rare, however, seems to be E.s.anomala. The few that I have seen photos of on the net have been pretty nondescript brownish snakes, in contrast to the one in Staszko(sp?) and Walls book which is an attractive yellow, green, and brown (and which was credited to L. Lemke).At the risk of sounding like a "morphist", does anyone have any experience with this snake, and if so, can they comment on the coloration? I would be interested in working with this ssp., especially if they look like the animal referred to above. Thanks.
