Hello Jeff,
You are correct, there is more to this specie than is included in your humble Hobbyists Guide to Elaphe and Kin. Even the best book on the subject of Elaphe ( by Klaus-Dieter Schulz ) is out-dated. It would be a very good idea to purchase this book for descriptions of each subspecie. There was a revision completed on this complex in 1999.
E. p. porphyracea
W. China,Burma,Thailand,India,and Nepal
E. p. pulchra
Central China
E. p. kawakamii
Island of Taiwan
E. p. coxi
Northern Thailand
E. p. laticincta
Malaysia or Indonesia
E. p. vaillanti
Southeast China
E. p. nigrofasciata
Type specimen only
It is very difficult to say who has what today. I am in the process of trying to get as many of the subspecies as I can. If you would like, I can keep you posted as to who is working with what. That is, after I get mine first.
Best regards,
Bill Mulligan
