Apparently sub-ocs have 40 chromosomes, four more than most other North American snakes. This is one of the reasons that they removed it from the genus Elaphe and put it into the genus Bogertophis (desert rat snakes) with the Baja ratsnake, B. rosalie. The name Bogertophis is in honor of the great American herpetologist Charles Bogert, who died in 1992. The sub-oc comes from the area under the eye where there is a row of small scales there called suboculars, from which the snake receives its scientific name.
