: Hello,
: Two days ago, I captured a black ratsnake. Today I let it go. It was about 3-4 feet long. Do captive born black rat snakes make good pets? I've kept cornsnakes, but I've heard that black ratsnakes are a bit more nervous/jumpy. Would the bite of a 4 foot black ratsnake be that painful?
The black rat snakes I've held have been calmer than most corns, actually... I've only been bitten by my ~5 foot long male once, as a result of a stupid feeding error, and it just bled a little bit... most paper cuts I've had were a good bit worse. Wild-caught ones can be a bit nippy at first, but captive-bred black rat snakes are about as good a pet snake as you can find. They usually eat very well, are generally very calm, and are, IMNSHO, very beautiful snakes. They get kind of large, but not one much over 6 feet is pretty uncommon.
