As far as I'm concerned russian (Amur) rats are one of the best pet snakes available. They
thrive on relatively cool temps and are one of the very
few snakes I've seen that are genuinely "curious" - they will spend
alot of time very carefully sniffing around their enclosures. You can keep them entertained
for days by putting something new in their cages, like leaves or branches.
Make sure they have a temp gradient in their cages - I was suprised how cool mine actually prefer
it. I have a very weak (45 watt) bulb at one end of a 20 gallon tank and they bask for a few minutes in the morning,
then retreat to the cool end of the cage for the day. I think keeping them too warm might do more harm then keeping them too cool.
Mine are about 3.5 feet long and are getting very dark over all with bright yellow, very Mangrove snake like, labials
and throat - good looking snakes.
: I am getting a Russian ratsnake and I was wondering if anybody here
: knowsa of any problems with that type of snake.
: Any feedback is apreciated
