Hello Andrew:
As far as I know there are not many of these animals collected out of the wild and very few captive breeding projects. I've also heard they are not the easiest of snakes to keep but once established they do quite well. I think they are uncommon mostly because there are not many specimens to work with and they are not real prolific. I've never had them but would like to one day. They are available occasionally.
Several years ago I saw one crossing a dirt road in Southern Arizona at around 11 A.M. in the middle of June. The sun was shining and the temp was around 100 degrees (F). When I got out of the car it scurried over an embankment and dissappeared in a field of ocotillo cactus. Ever since then I have developed an interest in them.
Maybe others that move to this forum can add more info about them. Have a Great Day!!!
