I also live in the mid-west. I keep mine at room temp, but because of the warm afternoon temps, I start running the central air much earlier in the summer than most people would. I like to keep them under 80 degrees. I give them about 3-4 inch deep aspen mulch for their burrowing habits, a bowl of moist sphagnum moss, and I use deep deli cups to offer their live pinks or fuzzies in. I just put a few in the un-covered deli-cups at night, and by morning their gone. My mandarins are so timid they just won't eat pre-killed when offered. They won't take live mice either, they shy away from them. So I use big fuzzies for the adults. In the photo, I've lifted the moist moss off the moss bowl so I could photograph the snake.
