I posted the following message before I started reading some of
the posts in the genereal snake forum and this one. Now I am
starting to think that I may just want to create a perminant
hole in the outside of the porch so the snakes that I have can
continue to use the under-porch setting for a home -- however,
I still would like to keep them out of the house. I guess that
means that I have to find the entry way they are using and
close it. What about the ones that are in the house when I do
that? Is there some kind of a one-way door that I could use to
make sure that all of them get out? Also, we just got two
maine coon kittens. Will this cure our problem if I let them
tour the basement once they get big enough to not be prey for
the snakes?
Thanks,
Larry

(original post to "what kind of... forum"
We posted to this forum about 6 months ago, and several
of you helped us identify a baby rat snake that we found
in our house soon after we moved in. We are now settled,
and need to do something about our problem. We are in
the country in the Leesburg VA area.
We have a front porch that is about 6' X 8' that is
bricked on the sides and front, and has no entry points
except for several places at the joining of the house
where there are several 1" cracks. We have seen several
snakes go into one of these cracks, and there is one
snake skin on the outside of the house that is about
5' long. We have found 3 snake skins in the basement
of the house also about 4 1/2 to 5 feet long, two of
them within 2 days. We just found (and moved to a field
down the road) 3 baby snakes in the last two days.
These snake skins and babys are in the basement just
inside of the front porch.
I saw a large (what appeared to be solid black) snake
behind the insulation balled up on the sill plate on
top of the concreat block basement wall, again,
just inside of the porch.
We have neighbors that got rid of a big black snake,
and now they have copperheads in their garage, so we
don't want to get rid of them, just keep them out of
the house, especially my wife's canned good storage,
which of course is just inside of the front porch.
I don't want to trap any of them inside of the house,
nor drive more of them into the house by excavating
the bricks on the porch to gain access.
Any ideas?
Also, will these snake hibernate, or stay awake
because of the warmth of the house?
Please send mail to llayten@megapipe.com which is
my home mail adderss as well as to larry@ljl.com
Thanks,
Larry (and Janie)
