Thanks all for the helpful responses !! Let's see....
There IS a good bit of commotion in my house: 14 year old son, 3 year old daughter ( we're having one every eleven years just for grins ), Welsh Pembroke Corgi ( for those who don't know - imagine a square, tan and white body, stout little legs, no tail, huge triangle ears, and a bark that can shatter glass when called for ). I'd imagine no snake would hang around in the ceiling for too long, in spite of the Rodent Buffet...my wife is allergic to cats, although we could have them be Outdoor Rat Assasins...Kids with bbguns would be entertaining till somebody shoots somebody who sues somebody.....The Bullsnake Option is intriguing...where would I get one ? I would consider it a contribution to our little habitat, knowing it probably wouldn't stay long...Meanwhile, as I write this, I can hear my little four legged friends puttering above me in the ceiling...I have trapped five in the last few weeks, and guess there may be a few more...I've seen garter snakes, I believe a Smooth Earth snake in the back yard, and possibly a big 'ole Brown Water Snake down by the dock, but no Rat Eaters...
Walked out of the garage not long ago and saw a Garter Snake in the driveway with a medium size Toad in it's mouth. First impulse: Toad Rescue. But nobody was moving so I figured I'd let nature take its course. That is, until the snake's head started pounding the pavement, lowrider style ! Those toad legs were in Full Combat Mode - so I kinda gently persuaded the snake to let go of his lunch, and the lunch went quickly fled the scene. I probably bought Mr. toad only a short lease on life, however....It's great being able to pick up a snake from the back yard and let my three year old touch it, and see it in a natural environment - she's not scared and enjoys the miscellaneous critters that turn up around here. My wife, however, is hopeless - if I do put a snake in the ceiling, I'll never tell. Unless, of course, it decides to explore the upper floors -THAT would be entertainment at its best !
Keep making suggestions if anyone has any - I'd rather have something eat the rats than have to kill'em.....
Bill
