This change has been accepted in literature -- Harding, Amphibians and Reptiles of the Great Lakes Region, and Bartlett and Tennant, Snakes of North America both recognize the eastern fox snake as a full species, just to name two. But hobbyists tend to be a little slow to accept taxonomic changes. I mean, it's only been nine years.
The grounds are as follows, if I'm not mistaken:
One, the ranges of the two taxa are hundreds of kilometres apart, and they cannot intergrade with another.
Two, they have markedly different habitat preferences: the western fox is a generalist; the eastern fox specializes in shorelines, and as a result is much more vulnerable to habitat loss.
