I'm pretty sure that black rat snakes are native to ohio, but I think I remember reading something about possibly being protected (anybody want to clear this up for me?). Your best bet would be to purchase on from a qualified breeder to ensure that your new snake won't have any major problems like a wild-caught one could. Black Rat Snakes normally attain lengths of 6-8 feet and the record (was?) 101 inches.
They can be very mean if they are wild-caught but usually calm down. That is another reason why a captive bred snake would be better.
