I also don't like the idea of housing a new snake with the rest of your collection. We have found that a quarentine period is always a good idea.
When we get a new snake and don't have its permanent housing ready yet we use a clear plastic Rubernaid container. These work well as temporary housing because you can by large ones very cheaply, they are escape proof, and easy to keep sterile.
Give this a try until you get his new home. We also tend to use only paper towel substrate for new snakes, as this makes it easy to obxerve their feces for any thing unusual.
