In Reply to: My friend's kids caught this Japanese Rat Snake (more) posted by Rob Jenkins on July 24, 2000 at 06:38:37:

: My friend's caught this little guy near their house. It was about 45cm total length with the vent about 15cm from the end of the tail. It was real thin, I guess correctly so, as it was a small snake. I have identified it as a Japanese Rat Snake, Elaphe Climacophora from this website: http://village.infoweb.ne.jp/~fwic4591/snake/namihebi/elphe/text/eaodaisyou.htm
: The snake was very calm, just wanted to get away, no biting, though. I was wondering how good would it be to keep one of these? I am mainly a gecko guy, but I may be interested in keeping a rat snake for a while. I'm assuming this snake was younger, and would grow a bit larger, as the website says it gets to 192cm. Are most rat snakes biters? I see a lot of pics on this Forum with feisty snakes and everything I've heard of leucistic black rats are that they are harsh.
: Just wanted to ask a couple questions and share the pics. I'll post the other pics I have below.
