In Reply to: Silly problem with my Leusistic TX Rat Snake...more... posted by James on July 04, 2000 at 02:40:10:
: I have had SNOW for at least a month now...he was born in 12-99...i hold him everyday, for at least 5 or more minutes...he never bites but still very jumpy and always trying to leave my hands as fast as he can...I have a ball python and a white lipped python, both of them are about 1 year old and they are nice and mellow...not SNOW...will he ever start to calm down?
: Just seems like hes sooo stressed out when i go to hold him...any suggestions at all?
: thanks in advance!
leave him alone a little bit rat snakes aren't like pythons and the babies are very nervous since they are near the bottom of the food chain. I wuld wait till he gets a little size before I started really trying to handle him. Usually with size comes confidence. just look at humans in school who is the most nervous kid in class? the littlest one. Who is themost confident? the biggest.
I know you want to hold your snake and get him to calm down but it isn't that easy with rat snakes. just handle him every few days so he knows you aren't going to eat him and only for a min or two and as he gets bigger handle him a little more often and for a little bit longer UNLES he strikes then hold him longer if you put him back in his cage after he bites he will quickly learn that it is a way to get you to leave him alone.
