Some Black Rat Snakes are extremely agressive and others are completely calm. The babies and the smaller Black Rat Snake bites don't hurt any more than a small prick in your skin, but a large rat snake (5 feet & up) can inflict a semi-painful bite, which will penetrate the skin and make it bleed. I don't know about the kitten-bite thing.
