: The only way you'd know it was safe would be to use the 100% clay kitty litter, but that really IS dusty. the dust will cause major problems in many snakes. Heck, I tried it once on turtles that are from natural habitata and it caused problems with them...and they had LOTS of ventilation.
: Misting it to reduce dust wouldn't help: if they burrowed, they'd still be inhaling dust AND you'd run the chance of getting scale rot from the overly moist/humid substrate. Both plans sound extremely dangerous to me.
: If you want something that is scoopable, try 1/8th inch (NOT 1/4 inch) ground corncob on older snakes. It scoops a lot like kitty litter, doesn't mold unless you let it get too dang damp with improper ventilation (anyone who has 1/8th inch corncob molding on them badly are running their cages too damp or not nearly ever changing it!), etc.
: Just don't FEED on the corncob since it can lead to impaction. It may dry smaller snakes out, but small snakes don't poop too much anyway. Make sure even adults have plenty of fresh water.
