In Reply to: What is the max. age of a ratsnake still breeding? posted by Pedersen, Søe on May 27, 2000 at 12:23:57:
: Hi everyone
: I have done some thoughts about the period of time in which it is possible to breed a ratsnake.
: I have had Elaphe situla for many years and they seem to produce fewer and fewer fertile eggs after the female has reached an age of about 10 years. The oldest breeding situla female, I have had was 17 years. Males seems to be able to breed throughout their whole life.
: My Elaphe mandarina has bred (and is gravid now)since 1991, and she was an adult wild caught entering Europe in 81. She must be more than 25 years old. She is also producing fewer and fewer eggs and the fertility rate is declining.
: It could be interesting to hear if anyone has any experience to share on this subject.
: Best wishes
: Søe
Hello
We just lost a female Ridley's rat that was imported as a 6' in 1984 and died this year during breeding. Her best producing years were the last 3 were she had 16/ 1999 100% hatch, 16/1998 and 13 1997. Luckily we have several of her offspring that are gravid this year.
