Childish enthusiasm..... a baby ratsnake looking out of the world for the first time. Rememberíng the first time it happened, and the thrill that followed..............
It wasn`t about money. It was true pleasure and happiness, Just looking at the baby worm, and everything else didn`nt matter.
I had a mentor. He kept very few reptiles. A pair of Anolis was among them, and he kept them is various ways. Small terrarium, large terrarium, outside in a tree, free living in a window, but he onluy recieved juveniles in a small terrarium (because he was able to find the eggs). After many years he finally kept them in a window and had lots of pleasure with it.... He didn`t get any juveniles, but that wasn`t the point. Thge animalsshowed the most natural exposure.
Getting back to our hobby with ratsnakes, there are two ways..... Thinking money only especially americans should breed the special color variations and get the best possible profit or maybe we should look another way.
More and more countries are closing down their export of wildlife including reptiles, and within the near future, it will be very difficult or impossible to obtain any wild collected speciems att all and we need to work on the animals we already have.
To be sure that our ratsnakes arn`t keeping any "albino" or other inconvineíate geens, we must do something. One way is to establish a maintanance group or to, cooperate between ratsnake breeders. At least we must prove that we are able to maintain the animals brought into our care. It will not be easy within the future, but if we all try our best it might be possible for our children also to buy ratsnakes.
I adore them, I love them. I cannot understand if any child cannnot get them because I didn`t do enough.
HBest wishes
Søe
