: I caught this little guy the other day in the back of a semi-truck that was making a delivery. I forklifted a pallet out of the back of the truck and the driver yelled SNAKE and jumped out of the back of the truck. Of course, I jumped in, and after about 20 minutes of hanging upside-down and crawling on my belly arround all of the other pallets in the truck, I got him. we don't have black rats here (NW Florida) but this guy is much darker than the gray rats we have arround here. and he could have been transported from somewhere else. it is a juvinile about 12" long. There are pics at the link below also there are pics of a juvi gray I caught last fall for comparison
: Thanks,
: Mike
Mike, remember that the Gray rat snake and the black rat snake our subspecies, mainly characterized by the difference in adult color pattern. Try to find out where the truck originated from or its last stop. It looks like the gray rat snakes from further east in the range, but even more looks like a juvenile yellow rat snake, keep it and feed it good and you'll know for sure in about a year. Good luck.
