: I never used UV lighting but it sounds like a damn good idea - sorta like you Mark - I never thought of it. Also Mark - what type of misting system do you use? I'm desperately in need of a home-made system as I live in Las Vegas, Nv. and tropicals don't fare well here and I'm not home enough to mist daily. I have 2.3 Black Tree Monitors and Spilotes Pullatus that require high humidities to cycle and I've got to construct a system on a timer! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bill
I use a home made system, using a car washer bottle pump and inexpensive plastic horticultural misting heads (Marketed by Hozelock here in the UK, for automatic greenhouse watering). The car washer bottle pumps are peristaltic and therefore generate sufficient pressure to generate a good mist, they are also readily available and cheap. This is connected to a 12v power supply on a domestic timer, with a 1 minute minimum on period.
Obviously if you can get a decent mains powered pump, a power supply would not be needed. Most aquarium and pond pumps do not generate sufficient "head" to get a mist, they just dribble! If you require shorter on periods, delay relays can be used in conjunction with the main timer to reduce the on time down to a second. These can be obtained for around $30 from electronic suppliers or $10 from electronics surplus outlets (They are probably cheaper in the States)! Mark
