dk,
I have been keeping most of my ratsnakes (Asian and European) on cypress mulch for the past couple of years with no ill effect. I also use aspen for the hatchlings and in "isolation boxes" that I use for brumation, and to isolate males from females during the breeding season. I had to buy and use pine shavings last winter because I couldn't find any aspen, but I think it smells pretty strong. Although I have not been able to observe any adverse reactions in the snakes that were on it, I don't know what effect (if any) it would have on their respiratory system.
Hope this helped,
Sacha
