: Hi Jeff. Yes! I live in Cheboygan Co., MI. And I understand your frustration with the DNR. People in every state have these frustrations, as the DNR officers try to protect our native species, and yet we are losing thousands to habitat destruction all the time. Of course, this is the problem, but can you blame the DNR for trying to protect what we have left? I wish we had more officers up north, because there just aren't enough to deal with some of the morons up here that cheat, kill herps along with other animals, and destroy property. It's too bad the officer you dealt with was so narrow minded. That gives people the wrong idea.

: In Michigan, five snakes are currently protected, with two of them being the black ratsnake, and the Eastern fox snake. The E. fox is threatened and the black rat is a species of special concern (A Field Guide to Reptiles and the Law, 2nd edition, by J. Levell).

: The permit was easy for me to get because I'm a teacher and because the snakes were all captive born. I have three black rats too. The DNR will send you a permit request form. You should give a pretty good reason for wanting to keep them.

: Also, the possession limit without permit of wild caught reptiles is six specimens in any combination. One nice thing about Michigan, however, is that there are no restrictions on the possession of non-native amphibian and reptile species.

: Good luck in your future dealings. Hope this helped. Terry.

It's always good to hear from a fellow Michigander on the forums. Your right about the DNR. The problem with them down here is the nature of their job. Down here they are mostly baby sitters for the water parks. When they get to actually do what they were supposed to be trained for , they overdo it. I didn't know a person could collect or keep protected species at all. That's partly why I gave up my eastern massasauga.

Thanks again
jeff
