There's about 7 or 8 subspecies. I have the Chinese (t. taeniura). They're very hardy, take a good brumation, don't get as big..maybe four to five ft., and have lots of morphs. I have the t-positive albinos and het. for calico's. I wouldn't say they make great pets, but mine are definately handleable and I've never been bitten.
Those Taiwans get huge. Had a pair once and they would almost take my hand off at feeding time...LOL.
