Jack -- I'd use a good mite spray to TREAT an infestation, but I have used diatomaceous earth in my PREVENTION program. The DE is placed in the garbage can in my snake room (just in case)and I've seen another breeder place some in large tuna cans (or sardine cans). He places the legs of his tables (his are stainless steel tables with skinny legs) into the cans filled with DE to act as a barrier for mites.
For my racks and trays I use a mite spray (Black Knight). The spray works as a preventative also, but those who find they have some critters running loose in the snake room should buy a couple cans pronto. When I switch out my dirty trays for clean trays, I wash my trays outside, sun dry them, and then spray them with Black Knight before I store them until the next change out.
