I used to do this all the time...as a kid and now my kids do it on and off. A few years ago we found a young black rat, kept it for a year....grew it a lot and then soft released it by opening it's cage outside and letting it find it's way out. We left food in the cage twice. The first time it got eaten, the second it got left so we stopped worrying. Though usually soft releasing a reptile isn't necessary. They are hard wired to live.
