:from the pics you've posted. Is that representative of the black rat snakes in that area of Virginia? I can't see much pattern and they're almost all black from the pics. Very nice black rat snake. Good luck

::Black Rat Snake belly shot. i caught 2 of these guys last Saturday. one of them was 5 feet long! the year is getting off to a good start!

that's pretty much the way they look around here. the one pictured was in better shape physically. the other one had mites or ticks and what looked like bites from mice or rats. they do occasionally have traces of white and sometimes red between the scales. they seem to be a pretty common snake. once in a while, i'll run across a juvenile. if i catch one this year, i'll post pics.
