Several years ago while collecting in KS I came across two black rats that at the time I though showed signs of bull snake influence. I don't know now if thats the case but these were VERY large 6'+ adults with unusual strong keeling of scales in addition to pattern and reddish ground color that in my experience is atypical through the black rats range and somewhat intermediate to that of a bull snake. For reference these were found at two different sites just east of the flint hills. Is this typical of black rats in this area or do bulls and black rats occasionally hybridize where their ranges overlap?
