I am no expert on Gonyosoma, but if I had a tropical forest snake that sat like that in its cage, I would be highly suspicious that the humidity in the cage was too low, especially considering that its previous owner said it was always in the hide box. Check the humidity of the cage. Maybe that's what the snake is telling you by always hanging out over the water bowl.
