I'm not surprised, since black rat snakes aren't found in Maine. Any all-black snake found in Maine would probably be a melanistic garter snake. And, while I'm no expert on E. o. obsoleta, if it was two feet long, wouldn't it still be a juvenile? Wouldn't it still have blotches? (At what point do they lose their blotches?)
: I never found that rat snake:( Searched 3-4 times a day, but it was never found again. No one claimed to see it again either, so who knows. I did however find a rather decent looking garter in that same spot. They may have seen this Garter snake and thought it was black. IT was a 2' greyish, very little gold with red stripes. I released her into my yard. Wishing I found a nice black rat snake...
