: I recently purchased a white oak rat snake.(I still can't seem to find anything on that type of snake!?!) It's about 17 inches long. How are they as pets? Will it ever get nasty as it gets older? How hot should I keep the tank? Are newspapers and/or papertowels the best substrate? Any advice on handling would be very appreciated!!!!
Look up info on Grey Rat snakes. White Oak Rat snakes are just a color phase (usually semi-locality specific) of the grey rats. They are OK pets, but proper research before the acquisiton may have lead you to purchase a more docile snake. These guys can be real nippy, but usually not as bad as some other rat snakes.
