...but I'll run it again for those newer forum rats who haven't.
It was in the late 70's and one of my first excursions south to find new species. The place was Pt. Pelee Provincial Park in Southern Ontario, and I was with a younger brother who was only in his teens and had his left arm in a cast.
I had just walked past a small one foot square rock that didn't look good...too close to the ground, right? So, my newbie brother, never having found anything, says, "What's wrong with this rock?" and proceeds to lift it with his one good arm.
In the next very confusing minutes, amidst the screams from my brother, who could only hold the rock up, I frantically pulled five adult Eastern fox snakes and a melanistic Eastern garter from the hole in the ground. At least two garters and whatever else slid back down the hole.
After photographing the snakes, and getting thoroughly musked and sweet smelling, we relunctantly released the snakes where we found them. It took us days to settle back down from the experience, and my brother still talks about it to this day. It was one of my best ever finds (my brother's find) and my first ever experience with Elaphe.
