As a child in the early 70s, we visited my uncle in the Ozarks of Missouri. I was around 8 and had just started getting really interested in snakes.
Walked over to an abandoned sawmill and pulled up this big black canvas tarp on the ground. Inside were 3 large (we measured one at 6 feet) black rats (and an Osage Copperhead). Actually I was almost afraid to pick them up (prior to that, my snake catching experiences were limited to ringneck and lined snakes!) but the snake hunter in me prevailed and I got musked from head to toe. My parents were somewhat surprised when I returned to our picnic spot with 15ft of rat snakes wrapped around my arms (at least I left the Copperhead!).
Whenever I smell obsoleta musk, I remember those big black beauties from that day.
