Dwight, Phil & All,
Hi. Here in my locality in Kentucky I have seen our obsoleta range in color from almost all black to looking ver spiloides-like. I have even seen some with a couple of red scales flecked here and there, as was mentioned by another poster----and every once in a while I see them with a semi-striped pattern (such as the one that I gave to you Phil that came from McLean Co.). I would say that our most typical coloration however is rusty "brownish" looking not unlike the pictures that Phil posted. Just a little south of my locality they can look a little drab olive in color. The locally noteworthy Kentucky field herpetologist Scott Shupe refers to this as the Southern Kentucky Intergrade. I caught such a specimen last year in Trigg County. So as you can see we get a wide variation of color over here in the west.
Best,
John (a.k.a. S.B. O'Gill) in Western Kentucky
