Phil
Looked for you at the show in Shelbyville, I may try and make your guys next meeting on the 12th.
That black rat looks alot like a few I have seen here in Hardin county. A dark olive color. Awesome snakes! Your right, man there is so much variation in the color of these guys, and for the most part arent really mean. (nothing like the racers here!! )
About the rats being jet black over in western KY, Thats just a hop, skip and a jump from where I grew up in southest MO. They are jet black there too, as well as in northeastern AR. Saw quite a few while camping out. So the state of KY has a wide variety of colors in the black rat.

: Interesting discussion! This is a pic of an obseleta from Jefferson county Ky, roughly 15 miles west of where Brians came from in Shepardsville. Throughout most of Ky, this is the typical look of the rat snake. I'm not sure how much gray rat influence there is this far east in the state, but they seem to retain pattern here in the north central part of the state.
:Interestingly enough, Dwight, sbogill, KE, and myself came across a large DOR in western Ky last year that clearly had much gray rat genetic influence. Much more than the typical Ky black rat. To add a twist to all this, I recently heard from state naturalist John MacGregor, that in the extreme west of the state, the obseleta's are solid black.
