need help identifing snake....with no pic

I live in east TN. I caught this lil baby snake. He's solid gray with black markings all over him, but there not a set pattern. He has no markings on his head. Any ideas he's got a checked belly to. I know he's definitly not a corn snake. I've had corns before. If I didn't know better I'd say this snake was an anery of some sort.
