I have noticed the cucumber smell in several ratsnakes. When I lived in Ohio I used to look for copperheads in spring by trying to smell them. They also have that cucumber odor.
BTW, let us not forget the fox snake as one of the most odiferous American ratsnakes, which is where they got their name from. They have a great smell that is very mammalian-like from my experience. Maybe they get it from hanging out in mammal burrows all the time.
