Tom, this should help you get a good shot or two....
First, set up a photo area on a table or other flat surface. Put down a towel or a sheet... Something with either a plain contrasting color, or a nice pattern that will not interfere with the subject (the snake). I usually use a white sheet, or a blue towel. Those colors seem to work well with just about everything ;-)
Next, set up something similar to the size of your snake. Sometimes I will just use a small stuffed animal (something bright). Snap some pictures, and write down the distance, camera settings, etc for each pic. Then download your pics, and decide which technique worked best. This is how I determined I needed to use my macro setting with no flash and about 1 foot away from the subject.
Finally... To get that perfect pic of your snake - Put the snake on top of the sheet or whatever surface you are taking the picture on. Put a large deli cup, ice cream pail, soup bowl, etc over the snake. Leave it alone for a good 10 minutes or so! Let that snake get good and comfortable in the dark, close confines of that "hide box". When you are GOOD AND READY, get your camera into position (this is where a tripod REALLY helps), quickly pull the cup/bin/box/bowl off the snake, and start snapping pictures. Most likely, the snake will stay put for 5-10 seconds, which should be adequate time to take at least 3 or 4 pictures. The snake should also be coiled up in a natural looking pose!
Good luck, and let me know if it works out for you ;-)

:Thse guys are so calm and mellow but I can never get them in focus. I thought a digital camera could turn anyone into an expert photographer but apparently I was wrong ( :
