I was curious as to how other keepers felt about this. I didn't think I'd be alone in taking fairly inexpensive animals to a qualified vet if the need arose. While I agree that there becomes a point when the amount of money comes into play - I don't have a spare $1,000 laying around, for example - I also felt that if home treatment didn't work it was the responsible thing to seek out medical care. That is not to say that I immediately take every reptile to the vet. I do try home care first when I feel it is within my realm of experience. However, most of my experience is in fattening up something that's been neglected and tending to superficial wounds. I've never come in contact with a reptile that had an infection of this nature before and didn't recognize it for what it was. Luckily for Storm (the grey rat), I did get him treated in time and he's expected to recover just fine.
I guess part of my opinion is colored by rescue and safehouse work I did some years ago. I took in a number of unwanted cats and dogs in years past and got them neutered and all of their shots before placing them in new homes - all with my own money. I've also volunteered to take in animals and care for them for the local humane society until they could place them. I guess I have 'sucker' written across my forehead when it comes to animals. :)
Thanks again!
