At the last Chicago show in October I aquired 1.1 Ridleyi and 1.1 Kunisir Rat Snakes. I have kept Whitesided Black Rat Snakes for some time now but this is my first experience with more exotic colubrids.
My first question is to the Ridleyi owners. So far I have had no trouble at all out of either snake other than their sheer willingness to bite. My question is in regards to enclosure size. I realize these guys will get substantial in length (6-8 ft). So how big of an enclosure should I be prepared to keep them in in the future? Is a sweater box too small or should I keep them in at least a 20 Gallon tank or larger? These guys are yearlings now and already 3 feet long and are being housed in a 24" Neodesha. I am sure by next year they will need something much larger. Also I have read the posts in regards to temerpature. I was told they like it warmer than most colubrids is this true? Currently they are kept at an ambient room temperature around 84 degrees with a small flexwatt under the Neodesha. And one last question is towards brumation and breeding. Anyone have any advice for brumation or future breeding of this pair? Do they even brumate at all and if so are there any special requirements?
Now for the Kunisir Island Rat Snake owners. My female is a yearling and my male was hatched out this year. Both are great snakes and very healthy. Both tend to be a bit flighty but I think I can handle that out of them. I was told they are like most colubrids in regards to temperature. Is this true? They are in the same room as the Ridleyi with an ambient temerature of 84 degrees. They are housed is a sweater box rack with no extra heat source. So there enclosure is of course warmer to the front and cooler to the back. One last question. Anyone have any advice on brumation and future breeding of this pair? Do they brumate like a typical colubrid or are there any special requirements?
Thanks in advance for any information!
