I think many people don't see reptiles as something worthy of being taken to a vet and don't hold them on the same level as furry pets. I'm not saying that about anyone in particular, I meant society as a whole. You made the comment, "As far as being able to fork out $1000 for a surgical treatment on a $20 snake, I would have to draw the line." Yet many people have spent several thousands of dollars for medical treatments on animals they got for FREE (dogs and cats from shelters). If I can afford REASONABLE medical treatments on my animals (a few hundred I could do while still being able to pay bills and the like, would be tight, but most of my animals still have many years ahead of them and if it would take that much to give them another 10 years plus, so be it). I also have non-feeder rats (i.e.: pets), and in the past have had one in to the vet for a tumour to be removed. What a person does really says more about their respect for life than anything.
