Common names: Cave dwelling rat snake, Striped racer, Elaphe taeniura ridleyi
Locality: Asia and provences
Habitat Bush, vegetated areas near water, edges of forests, moderately moist areas, rocky hillsides, caves & outside human settlements.
Longevity These snakes are long lived (20+years) and make hearty captives.
Temperatures: Our snakes have done well between 78 to 84 degrees.
Size: Most of this species reach 6 to 8 ft
Caging & substartes: Because of their large size, larger enclosures should be considered! Substrates that are acceptable are, news print, aspen bedding, non treated woodchips to name a few. We provide hide boxes which are used by almost all of our snakes. As with the Blue beauty snake, a large bowl is recommended for soaking, drinking & defecation.
Diet: Cave dwelling rat snakes will thrive on a diet of appropriate sized mice or rats. As with the Blue beauty snakes, a large amount of prey can be consumed at one time!
General information: We have found this beautiful species one of the most interesting of the Taeniuras to work with. With their bold colors and striping they have attitudes to match, but this should not sway anyone interested in keeping a truly unique species.
We hope that this is of some help, if you have any specific questions feel free to email us and we will try to help.
