In Reply to: Aesculapian Snakes...is anyone breeding them this year?? posted by ratman on February 05, 2000 at 16:28:07:

Interesting conversation here. Elaphe longissima is a true European ratsnake. Their range is not very big and their eastern border is around the black See in Turkey and Russia. I saw "chinese" longissima No way........
Beside the subspecies romana from the southern Italy there is a distint difference from the eastern and the western longissimas. The eastern ones gets bigger and is much easier to keep. They also gets larger than the western ones.
Most western longissimas dont eat rodents but are kept on a diet on lizards especially as juveniles.
They are not so easy as many other ratsnakes and many has problems with them. A steady breeding group is very rare and offspring are not so often seen even here in Europe.
Pics of the normal (western) and a melanistic longissima is shown on the webside.
My female is hopefully big enough to breed this year, so I really hope for a few melanistic ones. My old male is the only one left in the hobby.
Best wishes
